very rare self-winding pocket watch for Marchese del Toscano, c. 1910.
Case: rose gold 750, lépine, form Lucia, numbered 31839, enamelled monogram, diameter c. 52 mm
Movement: self-winding, gilt lever movement, spring-mounted pivoting weight, blued screws, compensation balance, Breguet overcoil spring, precision adjust, gold lever and wheel. Patent designation “Gebrauchsmuster Nummer 8972” [utility model number 8972].
Dial: enamel, Roman numerals, two auxiliary dials for power reserve index, small second
Accessories: original case, replacement glass and spring, two certificates, movement certificate of the Royal University Observatory in Leipzig from 1910, short chain gold 750 enclosed
The present pocket watch is a wonderful example of the manufacturer’s early models with automatic winding. A. Lange & Söhne produced only 38 pieces between 1891 and 1920. This watch was sold by the company Br. Müller in Catania and has been in the family of the Marchese del Toscano ever since. The first automatic watches have been known since 1800. Many of them were made by Breguet. A. Lange decided to use the movement patented for Dürrstein & Co and to register it under design protection 8972.
