A Large, Important Italian Baroque Console Table
Rome, first half of the 18th century, hardwood and softwood frame on cabriole legs, carved with ornamental and floral motifs and rocailles, carved heads on the sides, gilded, the frieze with 3 moulded carved mascarons with heightened shell decoration, cross-shaped carved stretcher with a girl’s head adorned with flowers, stone top with marble applications (“marmo giallo di Siena”), c. 95 x 230 x 90 cm, some flaking of paint and signs of abrasion, signs of age and use. Exquisite workmanship in exceptionally large format. A console table comparable in terms of its iconography, albeit earlier, can be found in the Casa Museo Signorini Corsi in L' Aquila (AQ).
