A Large Pearlware Group of a Cow and Calf, Circa 1820-40
Probably Scottish, the young calf nursing, both animals sponged with black markings, the rectangular stepped base with canted corners and with unusual geometric sponged decoration in blue, green, puce and black, 7 in. (19cm) high, 11 in. (29cm) long

In her catalogue of the McCormick Collection, Millie Manheim suggests this extraordinary group could be attributed to Portobello. The underglaze coloring, especially the use of black, puce and blue, is indeed a strong indication of a Scottish origin. The markings suggest that these are Friesian cattle. The sensitive modeling and generous scale of the group gives it character and great presence.
