A London-decorated Paris coffee can from the 'Baltic Service', circa 1802
Of cylindrical shape, with a border of oak leaves and gilded acorns above a victor's laurel wreath enclosing a fouled anchor and gilt inscription 'Nelson 2nd April Baltic' flanked by further gilt lettering 'Glorious 1st Augt' and 'San Josef', gold line rims, 6.2cm high
This can probably comes from the portion of the Baltic Set that passed from William, 1st Earl Nelson to his second wife, Hilare Barlow, Dowager Countess Nelson, Duchess of Bronte.

A similar can, lot 64 in this sale, came from the Charles Wentworth Wass Collection and was acquired from Viscount Bridport's sale in 1895. A matching teacup and saucer from the Baltic Service is in the Nelson Gallery at Portsmouth Dockyard, no.197/364. Another, in the National Maritime Museum, no.AAA4591/2 came from the Nelson-Ward Collection and may have belonged to Nelson's daughter Horatia.

For more information on the 'Baltic' tea services please see the footnote to lot 61.
