A Louis XV kingwood, tulipwood and palisander writing table, circa 1760, by Charles Topino, gilt metal mounted and decorated with a tessellating geometric design throughout, the cartouche shaped top sliding to reveal a pull out secretaire drawer with gilt tooled leather inset panel hinged with a mirrored panel to the reverse and revealing a tulip wood lined recess, above a further drawer to one side with a divided interior with button release mechanism, on square section tapering cabriole legs joined by an undertier, each surmounted by foliate cast pierced mounts and terminating in sabots, stamped 'C. TOPINO' three times to the undersides and 'JME' twice, 71cm high, 45cm wide, 34cm deep
Charles Topino was made master in 1773.
Established in the rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, Charles Topino specialised in the production of light furniture enriched with marquetry, either in the form of flowers or naive still-lives inspired by the borders of Chinese screens. He was most often employed as a specialist marqueteur by marchands such as Héricourt, Dautriche, Migeon, Denizot, Delorme, Tuart, Boudin and Moreau.
