Of typical form centered by a wheel barometer below a thermometer with enameled scale signed "LANGE DE BOURBON;" the case mounted with very finely cast ormolu rocailles.

Lange de Bourbon (French, active 1750-1775) was a noted maker of clocks and barometers of the mid-18th century, awarded the title of Machiniste-Faiseur de Baromètre du Roi before 1757, though relatively few details of his life are known. The form of this barometer, attributed to Claude-Joseph Desgodets, exists in a number of examples by important makers, including one by Jean-Andre Lepaute, sold Christie's London, 6 July 2005, lot 123.
A nearly identical model, also signed Lange de Bourbon on the enamel thermometer scale, can be found in the The Jack and Belle Linsky Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 1982.60.2. This example was acquired by the Linskys in the March 1931 sale of the collection of Baron Erich von Goldschmidt-Rothschild at Hermann Ball & Paul Graupe, Berlin, lot 180. It is noted that another similar barometer also by Lange de Bourbon was in the collection of Mme. Louis Burat, sold at Galerie Charpentier in Paris on June 18, 1937, lot 98.
Other examples of different forms also signed by Lange de Bourbon can be found in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 58.75.61; the Musée Nissim de Camondo, Paris; and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, accession number 1097-1882.
The present lot was in the collection of Monsieur Dubois Chefdebien sold at Hôtel Drouout, Paris, on Thursday, February 13, 1941, lot 82. It is illustrated in plate 32 of the catalogue and was described at that time as a "Baromètre-thermomètre en bois de placage et bronze doré, du temps de Louis XV. De forme contournée, il est marqueté en veuilles et présente une important décoration en bronze ciselé et doré : rinceaux feuillagés, écusson, branchages avec fleurs et graines. Marqué Lange de Bourbon."
