A MASSIVE ARCHAISTIC BRONZE VASE, LEI, EARLY TO MID-QING DYNASTY

China, 17th-18th century. Heavily cast, the baluster from supported on a recessed base, its rounded shoulder with taotie-mask handles suspending loose, twisted-rope rings, surmounted by a short neck with a flared rim. The body densely decorated with bands of animal masks and mythical creatures on a diapered ground with four pairs of flanges along the body and two along the neck. The base cast with an archaistic six-character mark.

Provenance: English trade. Acquired from a private estate.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, casting flaws, and small nicks. The bronze is covered in a rich chocolate-brown patina showing an elegant luster overall.
