A MASSIVE LONGQUAN CELADON CARVED 'PHOENIX AND DRAGON' CHARGER
Zhejiang, Ming Dynasty, 16th century
Heavily potted with deeply rounded sides and everted rim, supported by a short ring foot, the interior decorated with a pair of phoenixes at the center medallion, surrounded by a pair of dragons on the wall each chasing a flaming pearl amidst clouds, a band of ruyi pattern incised on the lipped everted rim, the exterior frelly carved with foliage branches, covered inside and out a lush, crackled celadon glaze except inside the foot ring, showing grey porcelaneous body burnt reddish-brown.

A dish with similar carved dragon and phoenix design, of the same massive size (45 cm.) is illustrated by J. Harrison-Hall, Catalogue of Late Yuan and Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, London, 2001, p. 492, no. 16:77, where it is dated c. 1550-1620.

A charger of slightly smaller size (40.2 cm.) with a similarly carved dragon and phoenix design, but featuring only one phoenix in the center, is illustrated in Celadons from Longquan Kilns, Taipei, 1998, p. 279, no. 267.
