A JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD GLAZED CERAMIC VASE WITH ROYALS AND SAINTS, SIGNED HODODA
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)
Richly executed figural scenes within two large reserves; one shows a royal lady with companions, servants and children, and Mount Fuji in the background, while the other shows a number of Rakkan (Japanese for Arhat) with gold halos. Nishikide decorations with much gold, with the satsuma-mon (cross within circle) among the various patterns. Two gold elephant heads on the neck. Signed HO-DO-DA 保 土 田 within a fan-shaped reserve, flanked by the character for SATSU-MA 薩 摩, with the latter character abbreviated. The character Satsu also means “Buddha“.
