A MIDNIGHT-BLUE GROUND EMBROIDERED INFORMAL OVERCOAT, WAITAO
19th century
Finely embroidered with roundels on the front, back and shoulders, each depicting courtly officials conversing in a terraced garden surrounded by peony flowers in Peking stitch against a background of scattered flower pots and auspicious emblems in blue satin and couched gold threads, bordered by jagged rocks and crashing waves at the hem, the sleeve bands elaborately decorated in couched gold threads with sinuous dragons chasing flaming pearls, the interior lined with blue silk.
101.7cm (40in) long x 130cm (51 1/8in) high.
