A MONUMENTAL MAMLUK COPPER BASIN
Egypt or Syria, 14th - 15th century
Of rounded shape, on flat base, the exterior incised with twelve circular interlaced medallions, three of which filled with bold thuluth calligraphy, the remaining ornamented with typical Y-shaped motif, intricate whirl patterns and scrolling tendrils, the composition framed by two interlaced bands filled with braided work and typical roundels, on the rim an inscription mentioning a date 1142 AH (1729) and possibly the owner Hasan Alton Barmaq, 40cm diam.
