A MOTHER-OF-PEARL INLAID BLACK LACQUER RECTANGULAR BOX AND COVER
Late Ming dynasty, 16/17th Century
Decorated to the cover with an extensive palace scene with various large storied buildings with balustrades, pathways and gardens dotted with figures, set amongst a variety of trees, a lake and rockwork, two elegantly dressed riders and their entourage arriving at a pavilion entrance in the foreground, the sides of the box and cover decorated with wide ogival panels with birds amidst fruiting branches on a diaper-cell ground with stylized flower heads, the base unusually inlaid with a mother-of-pearl flowering prunus with two birds on the branches and another in flight nearby, all silhouetted against the black ground, the metal hinges and lock plate probably a later addition
