A Mainz "cantourgen" cabinet

Walnut and burr walnut on conifer corpus, gilt brass mountings, iron locks. Three drawer chest with a veneered apron carved with rocailles on four short scroll supports below. Above it a writing cabinet with six drawers amd two pidgeonholes behind a slanted drop front. The upper section with two doors and curved terminal carved with acanthus, containing ten drawers in six rows surrounding a central comparment. Two secret comparments in the gable. Fine chequerboard marquetry to the front and sides. All edges with carved mouldings, the angles of the upper section adorned with scroll appliques. In carefully restored condition. H 227, W 133.5, D 63 cm.
Second quarter 18th C.

This piece is a fine example of the masterpiece required of all members of the Mainz cabinetmakers' guild as of the mid-1730s.

From the descendants of the von Oberndorff family, formerly owned by Alfred von Oberndorff (1870 - 1963).
