A Meissen porcelain dinner plate from the service for Johann Christian von Hennicke

Plate with scalloped rim decorated above with the armorial flanked by blue and gold acanthus scrolls. The well painted with a Chinoiserie landscape, indianische blumen and straw. Blue crossed swords mark. Minor restored rim chips at 2 and 4 o'clock, minor wear to the glaze. D 21.5 cm.
Circa 1740.

Johann Christian Hennicke (1681 - 1752) became mining minister of Saxony in 1718 and due to his exceptional service was raised to knighthood in 1728. Under the auspices of Count Heinrich Bühl, he was named vice director and head of the manufactory in Meissen in 1739. He chose a relatively modest decor for this service, in keeping with his career and status. It is no longer known how many pieces the service originally composed, but individual items still appear periodically on the market.
