A Meissen porcelain figure of a London courtesan
Finely painted figure holding a mask. Blue crossed swords mark to the back of the plinth, unglazed base engraved 10. Yellowed restoration to the tip of the nose, both arms, the fan and a chip to the back of the cloak. H 13.8 cm.
Model by Johann Joachim Kaendler, around 1750 - 55.
The particularly finely moulded figure with embossed and painted details comes from a series generally attributed to Johann Joachim Kaendler and Peter Reinicke, although no archival evidence of its creation has been found. The two modellers based their figures on the print series "The Cries of London" by Marcellus Laroon the Elder, which was published by Pierce Tempest in 1688. In the collection of the Meissen manufactory there is a model sheet for this figure (VA 399) with the old inventory number 2096 and remarks written in ink, which is illustrated in the catalogue of the Shimmerman Collection under fig. 11.
