A Meissen porcelain figure of the Virgin from a Calvary group

Smoothed base with blue crossed swords mark with star and original mounting aperture. Fingers, feet, and chips to the back hem of the cloak and the front folds restored. H 40 cm.
Model by Johann Joachim Kaendler, November 1747, produced after 1774.

A restored and now complete Calvary group is now housed in the Grassimuseum, Leipzig. Apart from the crucified figure of Christ, the group includes the figures of the mourning Virgin, St. John, and Mary Magdalene kneeling under the cross. In Leipzig, everything except the central base with the Magdalena figure and the individually preserved base of the former Mary figure are considered to have been lost during the war or post-war. The figure presented here comes from a later production, probably after Kaendler's death. The original rock base beneath Maria was omitted, and the figure was probably intended to be mounted on a carved wooden terrain base, as evidenced by the specially made slot on the underside.

Literature

Cf. Rückert, Meissener Porzellan 1710 - 1810, Munich 1966, cat. no. 912 for an early example on an earth mound base, then in the collection of Wilhelm Reuschel, Munich.
