A Meissen porcelain model of the tailor on the billy goat

[ translate ]

A Meissen porcelain model of the tailor on the billy goat

The tailor is shown in a flower patterned yellow justacorps riding on a billy goat with his scissors held aloft in his right hand, carrying two kid goats in a basket on his back. Small blue crossed swords mark to the back of the plinth, unglazed base. Restored. H 22 cm.
Model by Johann Joachim Kaendler, 1740, decor later.

This model is listed in Kaendler's workshop records of November 1740 as “a tailor riding on a billy goat, fully rendered and ready to be produced in porcelain, with all his tools”. This humorous depiction was, like the large tailor of 1737, presumably also intended to be a portrait of Count Brühl.

Literature

"Cf. the example in the Pauls Riehen collection in Meister (ed.), Porzellan des 18. Jahrhunderts, vol. I Meissen, Frankfurt 1967, p. 292 f.
Cf. Brattig (ed.), Meissen Barockes Porzellan, Stuttgart-Cologne 2010, no. 51.
The quote from Kaendler's workshop report in Pietsch, Die Arbeitsberichte des Meissener Porzellanmodelleurs Johann Joachim Kaendler 1706 - 1775, Leipzig 2002, p. 75."
