A Meissen porcelain snuff box with merchant navy scenes
With 18k gold mountings. Cartouche form box with a slightly domed lid. Decorated throughout with scenes of ships and harbours, as well as individual figures painted in puce camaieu in gold oval medallions in the spandrels. Unmarked. H 3.7, W 7.4, D 6 cm.
Circa 1730, decor attributed to Johann George Heintze.

Two identical boxes illustrated in Röbbig (ed.), Meissener Tabatièren des 18. Jahrhunderts, Munich 2013, no. 29 f. Ulrich Pietsch proposes, "dass die Maler aus ökologischen Gründen gelegentlich mehrere Tabatièren gleichzeitig bemalten" (ibd. p. 167). Röbbig also publishes the engraving by Anthony van Zijlvelt after Johannes Lingelbach upon which the design was based.
