A Mennonite Red-Stained and Stencil Decorated Pine

[ translate ]

A Mennonite Red-Stained and Stencil Decorated Pine Clothes Cupboard

Pennsylvania or Ohio, Dated 1855

stenciled Anne Youtze / 1855 in black, with compass rose stenciling in gold and black on top panels of doors and cornice, additional stenciled cornucopia and floral devices on upper door panels. One side with shelves, the other with clothes hooks.

Height 73 x width 52 x depth 20 inches.

The "Youtze" surname is quite rare in the Federal Census records. The 1830 census lists at least four males living in Londonderry Township, Lebanon, PA with large families, including unnamed women and children. Later, the 1880 Federal Census lists a single household of Youtze's living in Stark County, Ohio. We could find no "Anne" Youtze in the census records, suggesting this was a maiden, and not married surname.
Condition Report: Retains an original, dry red wash over white pine. Wash has aged unevenly, and the portion of the case and drawer are slightly lighter than the upper portion. Stencils are faded commensurate with age. Floral stenciling on door panels worn. Doors of pegged construction and retain original lock sets (more recent magnetic closures have even added) and attached with original brass "H" hinges. Spliced repair to proper left front foot covered by an area of darker red wash.
