A PADDED MIDNIGHT-BLUE GROUND INFORMAL OVERCOAT, AO
19th century
Finely embroidered with peony flowers in Peking stitch outlined by couched-gold threads and scattered with further polychrome floral sprays in satin stitch, the edges bordered by ivory ground ruyi-head bands enclosing flowers, birds, fences and rockwork, repeated around the collar, the rolled sleeves embroidered with a dense ground of hydrangeas and precious objects in Peking stitch embellished with further gold threads, the interior lined in blue silk. 108cm (42 1/2in) x 181cm (71 1/4in).
