A Mumuye Healing Sculpture Ex Banks collection
A Tall carved wooden shrine idol known as Iagalagana, some were used as oracles, others in connection with healing, and still others reinforced the status of important elders as embodiments of vaguely conceived tutelary spirits. Along the Benue River Valley region of Nigeria, such representations have been associated with a range of functions, including reinforcement of the status of male elders and use by healers and diviners in arriving at diagnoses. The flexible nature of tradition is reflected in the fact that a single figure may fulfill several roles. This example features a wonderfully exaggerated and stylized form, some well handled and weathered areas to the surface and edges, and a serene and somber face. Mumuye peoples, Nigeria, Africa. The figure measures 43 inches tall on its custom professional display base. Provenance: Ex Robert Banks collection, Maryland.
Condition Report: Good, very well worn
