§ NORMAN KIRKHAM R.G.I. (SCOTTISH 1936-2021) LIFE AS A STUDENT (SCENES FROM THE ARTIST'S LIFE) Signed lower left, oil on canvas

(170cm x 191cm (67in x 75in))

Footnote: Note: A much loved Scottish artist, Kirkham sadly passed away earlier this year at the age of 84. Former President of the prestigious Glasgow Art Club and Honorary Secretary of the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art, Kirkham was an alumni of the Glasgow School of Art.His work encompassed portraiture, landscape and still life, and is characterised by expressive brushwork. Often plumbing his own biography for material, Kirkham frequently explored the possibilities of the self-portrait and his own identity as an artist within this. The works offered here for sale include two major examples of the artist’s work, re-imagining chapters of his personal history on a monumental scale. Cleverly collaging dream-like glimpses of people and place, these scenes represent patchworks of memory, whilst the large scale of the canvases nods to the tradition of history painting; elevating his personal recollections whilst making a knowing play on the idea of one’s own personal canon, and the artistic canon.
