A Netherlandish silver-mounted tortoiseshell-veneered wood casket, unmarked, circa 1700

rectangular with hinged cover, the silver corner mounts and escutcheon plate engraved with scrolling foliage, the central applied cartouche engraved with mirror monogram 'WB', on four ball feet, purple velvet-lined
16.5cm, 6¼in. long

Condition Report:
Body very slightly warped so cover does not sit neatly, one foot dented, small piece of tortoiseshell missing, engraving on mounts still crisp.

Provenance:
Probably William Beckford (1760-1844);
His daughter Susan Euphemia, Duchess of Hamilton (1786-1859);
Her granddaughter, Lady Mary Louise (1884-1957), only child and principal heir of William Alexander Douglas-Hamilton, 12th Duke of Hamilton, who married in 1906 James Graham (1878-1954), Marquis of Graham who in 1925 succeeded his father as 6th Duke of Montrose.
Thence by descent.

Condition Report:
Body very slightly warped so cover does not sit neatly, one foot dented, small piece of tortoiseshell missing, engraving on mounts still crisp.
