A North German/Flemish statue of a mourning Madonna, circa 1600Three-quarter sculpture of the Virgin Mary carved in gilt walnut, her face painted in colour. A drape of cloth clasped in her hands, she bows her head, her gaze downcast in grief. Originally created as part of a group of figures for an altarpiece (probably an Entombment or Deposition of Christ). Her left arm and hands separately attached. On a semi-circular, stepped pedestal.
