A PAIR 19C. AMERICAN PORTRAITS STYLE OF MICAH WILLIAMS

[ translate ]

The circa 1830s pair in their original framing with original glass are executed in pastel and charcoal on paper stretched on wood frame stretchers and backed by newspaper of the period. The medium, the handling of the facial contours, and other features are similar to works by new Jersey portraitist Micah Williams (1782 - 1837), including the ''very prominent eyebrows, rounded face.simple, plain background'' in the words of Christopher Fox speaking about an 1835 pastel portrait attributed to Micah Williams, PBS January of 2024.

Interestingly, the male sitter was afforded the extra charge of including a hand in his depiction. His spectacles, with their interchangeable blue and colorless lenses, are a fascinating detail rendered with folky charm and genius.

Canvases measure 26.5 x 21.75 and 26.5 x 21.5, the frames are 35 x 30 inches each.
