A PAIR OF 20 BORE SILVER-MOUNTED FLINTLOCK OFFICER'S PISTOLS BY BRUNN, 56 CHARING CROSS, LONDON, 1803-4, MARK OF MICHAEL BARNETT with rebrowned twist octagonal barrels fitted with silver fore-sights, inscribed '56 Charing Cross, London' over the breeches, inlaid with gold lines and with gold-lined vents, border-engraved tangs incorporating the back-sights and decorated with trophies-of-arms, signed stepped bevelled locks decorated with foliage on the tails, fitted with bolt safety-catches, cocks decorated en suite, rainproof pans and steel springs with rollers, figured walnut half-stocks, finely chequered butts with slender terminals in the German taste, engraved iron trigger-guards with pineapple finials and trophies-of-arms on the bows, silver pommels engraved with border ornament, starbursts and expanded flowerheads, vacant shield-shaped escutcheons, fore-end caps with starbursts, barrel bolt escutcheons engraved with foliage, and iron-tipped wooden ramrods 24.5 cm; 9 5/8 in barrels (2) For a discussion of Michael Barnett, 'the Gunmaker's Silversmith', see Dickens 1999, pp. 86- 117.
