清 青花開光福壽紋雙耳扁壺一對 乾隆款
The flattened circular body rising from a short spreading foot to a tall cylindrical neck, flanked by a pair of ruyi handles, moulded to both sides with a peach-shaped panel in low relief and painted with bats flying around leafy branches with clusters of fruit, surrounded by scrolling lotus, the sides with a vertical band of lingzhi scroll, rising to a band of lotus scroll, with upright lappets and further lingzhi at the neck, the base inscribed with a seal mark. Qing Dynasty period.

Provenance: From the Eckhardt family collection (Lot 2001 - 2220). Acquired between 1947 and 1952 in Japan by Dr. and Mrs. Mary and Richard Eckhardt, both natives of San Antonio, Texas. The couple married in 1942 while Dr. Eckhardt served as a surgeon in the United States Army. Stationed in post-World War II Tokyo from 1947 onwards, Dr. Eckhardt was later joined by his wife. During their time in Japan, spanning from 1947 to 1952, the couple enthusiastically amassed a notable collection of fine Asian art from esteemed dealers and establishments such as Yamanaka & Co. in Kyoto, T. Kasahara and Ono Art Shop in Tokyo, and Watanabe Shozaburo, a renowned print publisher. Their extensive collection was featured twice at Sotheby's New York Asian Art Sales in 2012.
Dr. Eckhardt received numerous U.S and Allied awards and decorations due to his outstanding service in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and Japan. Following his retirement from the army, he dedicated a decade to serving as a physician at the San Antonio Sate Hospital.
