λ A PAIR OF CHINESE HARDSTONE AND IVORY-INLAID LACQUERED WOOD CABINETS Late 19th / Early 20th Century 十九世紀晚期或二十世紀早期 百寶嵌嬰戲圖紋櫃兩件 Each cabinet with a pair of hinged doors decorated with ladies watching over groups of boys playing in a leafy garden landscape dotted with pine trees and foliage, formed with finely-carved ivory and hardstone inlay on a caramel-coloured ground, mounted with a central brass pin lock and articulated handles, all bordered by gilt-painted diaper borders and cartouches enclosing bamboo and foliate sprays, the sides further-decorated with leafy stems extending up and issuing peony and chrysanthemum blossoms as butterflies fly overhead, 78cm high, 55cm wide, 23.5cm deep (2) λ Ivory submission reference: W2DFUMHU 象牙申報編號： W2DFUMHU - PROVENANCE: From the collection of Augustus Fletcher (1928-2020), thence by descent. From 1948 to 1958 Gus Fletcher served in the Colonial Police in Malaya, and latterly was Assistant Superintendent of Police and Area Special Branch Officer in the Kuala Pilau and Bahau Police Districts of Negri Sembilan. He was awarded the George Medal in 1957 after a combined police and military operation code-named “Googly” during the Malayan Emergency.
