A PAIR OF GEORGE II WALNUT SIDE CHAIRSPOSSIBLY IRISH, IN THE MANNER OF GILES GRENDEY, CIRCA 1745each 102cm high, 64cm wide, 65cm deep For a set of six chairs of related overall form and attributed to Giles Grendey see, Christie's, New York, Important English Furniture and Objects of Art, 16th October 1998, Lot 32 ($112,500). Please note, it is possible that this pair of chairs are of later date than catalogued.Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions, wear and fading comensurate with age and use.Some old repairs. Old splits and chips. Various fragments of loss and indentation mainly due to use of nails to attach old upholstery as expected. Some movement between joints as expected for age and use. As photographed, the chairs are the wooden frames only with no upholstery or underlying support/ filling for upholsteryVarious nails present in the frame from previous attachment of upholstery. The nails vary in age. Some later screws used to secure the joints of the frame that would be underlying upholstery. Some evidence of glue and glued material used previously to support joints. No obvious breaks to the legs or significant replaced elements to the legs or 'ear' brackets at the tops of the legs. Some loose fragments to frame that would underly upholstery. Some evidence of old worm damage. This is most evident to one side of one front seat rail. One carved 'ear' bracket adjacent to this is also loose in position but present. (see additional images) . To the corresponding area of the top of the seat rail of the other chair there is a shallow spliced in later section of timber that is secured with two screws (see images) The chairs are generally of solid structure but likely require some repair/ attention to joints prior to re-upholstery in order to be entirely satisfactory and remain solid for a long period.
