A PAIR OF GEORGE III WALNUT SIDE CHAIRSThe padded backs and seats upholstered in contemporary floral gros and petit-point needlework on moulded legs and stretchers, re-railed, the needlework distressed 95cm high, 53cm wideProvenance: The covers wrought by Susanna Jennens (1688-1760)Condition Report: These chairs are probably early mahogany, rather than walnut as stated in the catalogue.There are some marks, scratches, cracks, chips, and abrasions consistent with age and use, some to the extremities and edges.There is evidence of old worm including to the legs with associated wear due to worm to some of the feet.The pale blue linen back upholstery and pale blue moquette upholstered seat sides are later than the gros and petit point. The later braid around the edges is detached and missing in some areas. The gros and petit point needlework backs are less worn than the seat sections. Overall the needlework has variably some threadbare patches; some holes and tears; some rubbed wear, for example to the corners of the seats. The re-working in particular to the seat sections includes applique type re-backing and patching; darning, cotton thread stitching, wool thread stitching. One of the seats has a large patched central section.Please note we have not inspected the frame that is not visible under upholstery and can't comment on the condition and originality of this area.
