A PAIR OF LARGE ORIENTALIST POTTERY VASES WITH BRONZE FINISH
Possibly Germany or France, late 19th - early 20th century

Each of urn-like shape, resting on a tall splayed foot, rising to narrow shoulders and a flared neck with a wide circular rim, the handles on the sides moulded into the shape of mahouts riding elephants and dressed in ceremonial garb, the body decorated with drapes and embroidered festoons featuring tassels and rosette medallions with the Ottoman symbol of the crescent moon and star, further overlapping decorative friezes featuring traditional Islamic designs like palmettes, arabesques, scrollwork and geometric fretwork, the bisque-fired clay painted with a mix of copper or bronze filler with matte varnish giving a bronze verdigris finish to the ceramic creation, imitating Austrian cold-painted bronzes of the 19th century, each 61cm high.
