Of baluster form, the stem cast with a figural relief of maidens, probably Maeneads, terminating in acanthus leaves and square paw bases
Approximately 277cm high
Catalogue Note: The present torcheres are derived from a circa 1st century AD Roman prototype in marble, recorded as being in the collection of the Louvre.
The casts from which the present examples are derived are almost certainly from the collection of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen.
A cast of this model, surmounted by a flame, can also be seen in early 20th century photographs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's hall of architectural casts.
Condition Report:
Each with some surface marks and wear and repairs to protruding acanthus scrolls.
Generally good condition.
