A PAIR OF LOUIS XV PARCEL-GILT AND GREY-PAINTED FAUTEUILS BY...
The cartouche-shaped backs on channeled frames with cabriole legs, carved at the cresting and seat rails with laurel and flaming urns, each stamped 'P. REMY' at underside, inscribed with various numbers, some minor differences in carving consistent with belonging to a larger set
38 in. (97 cm.) high
Provenance
Acquired from Segoura, Paris.
Lot Essay
Pierre Rémy, maître in 1750.
Rémy worked as both a joiner specializing in chairs and a carpenter for buildings from 1750 to 1780, when he filed for bankruptcy. Sought after by aristocrats and merchants alike, his chairs were remarkable for the diversity of their forms, his style evolving from a pared-down Louis XV style toward a Greek-inspired Louis XVI style, represented on these chairs by the carved Classical urns at the top and seat rails. After heading a major workshop and collaborating with Delanois, Pierre Rémy died at the age of 74, completely ruined. A pair of giltwood chairs apparently identical to these, from the Collection of Monsieur Rene Smadja, was sold Christie's, Paris, 19 December 2007, lot 721 (€32,400).
