A PAIR OF PHOTOLITOGRAPHS FROM THE FIRST PROTEST IN MECCA IN 1922 AND A COPY OF 'AL-LATAIF AL-MUSAWWARA'
Saudi Arabia and Egypt, 1922
Comprising two black-and-white photolitographs depicting protests held in Mecca in 1922 against British policy in Palestine and the establishment of the Jewish National Home, with maker's mark lower left, and a copy of the Egyptian newspaper Latif Al-Musawwara, dated 5 June 1922, with the opening page referring to the shipwreck of the British steamship Egypt and reporting, on page 9, on the protests in Mecca, reproducing the same two photographs offered in the present lot; these highly interesting historical sources document the early movements related to the 'Palestinian Question', reflecting the mobilisation of the Arab population in support of Palestinian autonomy, as attested by another historical source dated July 1922, in the wake of the recent protests, the source records that a Palestinian delegation travelled to Mecca to warn King Hussein ibn Ali of the perceived dangers posed by the policy of the Jewish National Home. Concerned by the delegation’s activities, the British authorities in Palestine sent a letter to the government of the Hijaz rejecting its claims and asserting that the Arab population of Palestine was prospering, the Hijaz government, however, rejected the British response and called for the annulment of the Balfour Declaration of 1917 (Suleiman Mousa, in International Journal of Middle East Studies, Vol. 9, No. 2).
