A PAIR OF RUSSIAN ENAMEL TOPOGRAPHICAL PLAQUES WITH VIEWS OF SAINT PETERSBURG, 19TH CENTURY

Russian, 19th century. Each rectangular porcelain plaque is finely painted with a topographical view of Saint Petersburg: the first depicting sailing vessels, fishermen, and figures along the Neva River, with buildings lining the opposite embankment. The second shows the Kazan Cathedral beyond an arched canal bridge, populated with pedestrians and a boatman. Each plaque is mounted within an embossed gilt-metal slip and a rectangular veneered wood frame fitted for suspension.

Dimensions: Plaque: 2 1/16 x 3 1/4 in., (5.2 x 8.3 cm.); Frame: 5 x 6 3/8 in., (12.7 x 16.2 cm.)

Conditions: Both appear generally intact, with scattered light surface marks and minor rubbing. The plaques have not been examined out of frame.
