A PAIR OF RUSSIAN ENAMEL TOPOGRAPHICAL PLAQUES WITH VIEWS OF SAINT PETERSBURG, 19TH CENTURY

Russian, 19th century. Each rectangular porcelain plaque is finely painted with a topographical view of Saint Petersburg: one presenting a busy prospect across the Neva River, with a Russian-flagged sailing vessel, small boats, and figures before the city’s classical waterfront. The other depicts a broad urban avenue with horse-drawn carriages and figures before a monumental neoclassical public building. Each is set within an embossed gilt-metal slip and mounted in a broad, geometrically veneered wood frame fitted for suspension.

Dimensions: Plaque: 2 1/16 x 3 1/4 in., (5.2 x 8.3 cm.); Frame: 5 x 6 3/8 in., (12.7 x 16.2 cm.)

Conditions: The plaques have not been examined outside their frames but appear intact. Very light signs of wear and use are consistent with the age.
