A PAIR OF RYUKYUAN PAINTED RED, BLACK AND GILT LOBED-OCTAGONAL LACQUER BOXES AND COVERS
18th Century
The flat top of the rounded boxes with a slightly raised central panel of octagonal lobed shape painted in raised low relief with a design of black and red-painted lotus pads and flower-head groupings around a central full-faced lotus, all with gilt highlights, these panels set above the lobed rounded sides of the covers with a similar but more stylized lotus design, the boxes similarly decorated but with more traces of gilding, the interior and base with sprinkled gold ground nashiji.
