A PAIR OF SYRIAN ENAMEL COPPER HANGING LAMPS WITH HEBREW INSCRIPTIONS
Damascus, Syria, 19th century
Cast bronze with openwork and enamelled decoration; the bulbous body with pierced decoration featuring arabesques enamelled in red, blue and white, knotted finials, suspension loops and a long Hebrew inscription in blue against a white ground, bordered by narrow turquoise bands; inscriptions include Psalm 146:5 from the Hebrew Bible: 'Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord' and Chronicles 16:27 'Glory and majesty are before him, strength and joy are in his place', which formed part of King David's psalm of thanksgiving following the return of the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem; such enamelled production is typical of Syria.
