It is based on Theodore Dreiser's 1925 novel, An American Tragedy, and the 1926 play of the same name. The film tells the story of a working-class boy who gets a job working for his wealthy uncle. The young man gets entangled with two beautiful women, resulting in a tragic outcome. This film was a big success at the time of release and won six Academy awards.
