OTHER NOTES:

The original version of this shield, in damascened silver and now in the Victoria & Albert Museum, was made by Elkington & Co. especially for the Paris Exhibition of 1867. The designer and maker, Leonard Morel-Ladeuil (c.1820-1888), worked for Elkington & Co. from 1859 and by the time of the Paris Exhibition, was considered by many to be the most important artist in this field. The theme celebrates the work of the poet John Milton (1608-1674) and his most famous work Paradise Lost.
