A PRINTED 'BOOK OF CANONS' ACCORDING TO THE RITE OF THE MARONITE CHURCH OF ANTIOCH
Rome, Italy, Typographia Sacrae Congregationis de Propaganda Fide, 1750

A fine, exceptionally well-preserved copy of this 18th-century liturgical and canonical text published by the press of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith (Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide) in Rome for the Maronite Church of Antioch., composed of 450 pages; text in Syriac (Western Syriac/Serṭō script) with Karshuni glosses and rubricated headings in red and black, set within double-ruled borders, full-page engraved frontispiece illustration of Christ in Majesty (Salvator Mundi) surrounded by the Four Evangelists, with Syriac captions, and decorative floral title border, woodcut tailpieces, and initials.

29cm x 21cm

Following the 1736 Maronite Synod of Mount Lebanon (Luwayza), organized under the leadership of Joseph Simon Assemani, Propaganda Fide initiated an extensive printing campaign to standardize Maronite liturgical practices and canon law while preserving the traditional Syriac heritage. Volumes from this series were issued in limited press runs primarily for high-ranking clergy, monasteries, and dioceses across Mount Lebanon, Cyprus, and the wider Levant.

This copy is distinguished by its crisp condition, complete full-page Christological engraving, contemporary Eastern-influenced blind-tooled calf binding, and provenance linking it to Abbé Jean M. Cirilli, Vicar General of the Maronite community of Cyprus during the late 19th century. Ink gift inscription in French to the lower title margin dated 5 March 1893, presenting the volume to the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene (Sainte-Madeleine) in Brussels. With a contemporary full calf binding with blind-stamped floral border and central mandorla/oval medallion ornament to boards. Presented in a custom-made protective plexiglass slipcase box.
