Rome, Italy, Tobia Anaissi (1870-1948), Max Bretschneider, 1911

Composed of 576 pages, compiling centuries of official correspondence and legal decrees sent from the Vatican to the Maronite Patriarchate in Lebanon, the book also serves as a primary source for researchers studying Maronites and Eastern Catholic Church history, Vatican-Middle East relations, and canon law, the handwritten presentation inscription in Italian on the half-title/flyleaf reads: ‘Omaggio dell'Autore a S.E. Rma e Rma Mons. Antonio Arida Arcivescovo di Tripoli’ (with the author's compliments to His Most Reverend Excellency Monsignor Antoine Arida, Archbishop of Tripoli); an exceptional association copy linking two major Maronite ecclesiastical figures of the early 20th century, the author, Abbot Tobia Anaissi (1870–1948) of the Maronite Aleppine Order (O.M.M.), was a renowned scholar and linguist who compiled this primary sourcebook of papal bulls, letters, and constitutions sent from the Vatican to the Maronite Patriarchs; this copy was presented to Monsignor Antoine Arida while serving as the Maronite Archbishop of Tripoli (a position he held from 1908 until 1931), prior to his election as the 73rd Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and All the East (1931–1955).
