A PUA KUMBU CEREMONIAL CLOTH.

Indonesia, Borneo, Sarawak, Iban, 1st half 20th c. Ca. 210 × 130 cm.
Warp ikat of handspun cotton, undyed and in red-brown hues of natural dyes. The pattern consists of two rows of crocodiles with a rare depiction of the heads in a row from the side. The edges finished in fine ikat and stripes. Minor wear.

Provenance: Old Swiss private collection, acquired in Sarawak ca. 1990 (no documents available).
