A Pair Of 4Pdr. Iron Carronades
Early 19th Century
Each of tapering three-stage form with raised mouldings, painted black overall and cast in relief with a crowned '4' on the reinforce, touch-holes (sealed) each on a raised integral block, knob-shaped cascabels each with integral breeching loop above, and plain trunnions: on later wooden carriages of stepped naval type with iron-shod wooden trucks and iron mounts all painted black (2)
112 cm. barrels, 8.5 cm. bores
The carronade was first manufactured in 1778 by the Carron Iron Company at Falkirk in Scotland, and remained in service in many varied forms until the 1870s. Designed for short range naval engagements, it fired a low velocity hollow shot designed to cause maximum damage on impact with the side of a ship. See H.L.
