Property from a Distinguished Southern Family

A Pair of Queen Anne Scarlet and Gold Verre Eglomisé Pier Mirrors, Circa 1710
losses to églomisé decoration and repaired cracks; slight variations to engraving on crest panels and to ground colour

height 80 1/2 in.; width 32 in.
204.5 cm; 81.3 cm

Condition Report:
This remarkable pair of mirrors is well presented and in good condition relative to its age, scale, and fragility of material. There are several cracks to border plates including top of cresting and lower vertical boarder on one, and in the cresting and borders and lower proper left corner of plate on the other, these all generally visible in catalogue images. Losses, oxidation and discoloration to gold and red eglomise decoration which is to be expected but overall large areas of the decoration are very well preserved. As stated, variations to ground color in particular two crest panels and one side panel of one mirror where on close inspection overlapping squares of red foil of a slightly different color are visible, suggesting later restoration or replacement. Gold and black decoration of moulded wooden borders refreshed, and gold and black parchment leaves replaced. Beveled plates with oxidation and losses to silvering, plates have been resilvered and have age are possibly of the period.
