A Parisian silver plate from the Emperor Napoleon I's Service de Campagne

Round plate engraved with the coat-of-arms of Napoleon with an ermine cloak and imperial crown. The underside engraved with the inventory number "359" and the later inscription "Sieges Zeichen aus der Feld Equipage des Kayser Napoleon nach der Schlacht bey belle Alliance, erbeutet ohnweit Genappe am 18. Juny 1815." (victory symbol from the field equipment of Emperor Napoleon at the battle of the Belle Alliance, looted close to Genappe on 18th June 1815). Diameter 21 cm, weight 235 g.
Marks of Martin-Guilleaume Biennais, 1809 - 12.

In 1804, Napoleon commissioned Martin-Guilleaume Biennais to produce the extensive "Service de Campagne", which he carried with him on his travels in his six-horse Berline carriage. The service was delivered in several instalments between 1804 and 1815; an inventory of the court silverware drawn up in 1812 lists, among other things, 100 soup plates and "594 assiettes à couteaux de voyage", i.e. flat dinner plates. All the pieces were given an engraved inventory number by Biennais in September 1812; the present plate with the number 359 was therefore made before 1812.
After Napoleon's defeat in the Battle of Waterloo on 18th June 1815, the Prussian troops under Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher fell into the hands of the French travelling equipage stalled in an open field outside the village of Genappe. The so-called "Blücher loot" from the emperor's personal travel carriage included, in addition to his wardrobe, weapons and jewels, parts of the Biennais travel service, which were distributed among the crew and officers.
