A. Pombo and J.L. Dales VI Salón del Automóvil vintage poster

[ translate ]

Caption Brief: "The universality of art deco style is perhaps best expressed through the posters that come from the most unexpected places. Here we have an image for a rather obscure automobile show in Uruguay. Although elements of art deco are still evident in the country's historic architecture, one does not necessarily think of Uruguay as a center for deco graphic design. And yet this poster rivals the compositional quality of some of the best European images of that era, giving us the seductive essence of the event rather than a depiction of an absolute object. Were it not for the presence of the wheel, one would not even be able to tell that these waves and acute angles are meant to represent a car; yet once the shape of an automobile is inferred, we know instantly that it embodies the apex of style and fills the vast halls of the Parque Hotel with inimitable luxury" (The Art Deco Poster, Crouse, p. 66).
