A Portuguese faience tile picture with a view of Lisbon
Painted on 11 tiles mounted in eight rows on a wooden panel. A small repair to one of the top right tiles. H 109, W 150.5 cm.

This work depicts Lisbon before the great earthquake of 1st November 1755. During the earthquake, which was accompanied by a tsunami, almost the entire city was destroyed and vast swathes of its population were wiped out. The event remains unforgotten and has left its marks on the city to this day.
