Framed.Printer: Reference: Key Words: Modern; Israel; Jewish InterestA Prayer for the Government. ca. 1941.The Jewish tradition of praying for the government dates back to 586 B.C.E. when the prophet Jeremiah prayed for political well being after the first expulsion from Jerusalem. In the 14th century, David Abudarham's variant on the prayer was included in the modern prayer book; this was eventually adapted for various countries with Jewish residents. Here, the prayer is addressed to Franklin D. Roosevelt as he negotiates the terrain of World War Two and the beginning of the Zionist insurgency. Employing Yiddish, Hebrew, and English texts, the prayer concludes with this wish for the American President and Vice President: "May the Supreme King of Kings in his mercy inspire their hearts and the hearts of all their counsellors and representatives with tenderness, to act kindly towards us and all Israel. In their days and in ours may Judah be succored, and Israel dwell in safety, and a Redeemer come unto Zion, in accordance with God's gracious will: And let us say: Amen!"
