A QAJAR LACQUERED PAPIER-MÂCHÉ MIRROR CASE WITH A HAMMAM SCENE
Iran, dated 1226AH (1811)
Of rectangular shape, lacquered, polychrome-painted and heightened in gold, the top of the lid decorated with a vertical composition depicting a group of naked women in the hammam, the one on the far left, next to the mother and child, looking back at the beholder whilst her attendant urges her to start bathing, brass and copper tas (bath basins) lying in the foreground and carried by a dark-skinned attendant on the top left corner, the interior of the lid and back of the case with the typical gol-o-bolbol motif, inscribed in gold 'Ya Sahib Al-Zaman' (the takhallos of the lacquer master Muhammad Zaman) and dated 1226AH, within bands of floral sprays and vegetal motifs, 21.5cm x 14cm.
